Five essential F&S services for the new academic year

Services you may need in the coming months and contacts for each.

As fall kicks into high gear, Facilities & Services is here to help keep things running smoothly. Lost your water bottle? Room too hot? Made a spill?

Whether you are a campus veteran or someone to whom our beautiful city-within-a-city is all new, here are some reminders of the services available to you.

1. Caretaking

Caretaking is your go-to group for maintaining the cleanliness of interior spaces.

Their regular services include supplying chalk, general cleaning, lamp replacement and maintaining washroom supplies. Some of Caretaking’s most common service orders are for excess garbage pick-up, refills of hygiene supplies and lamp replacements. Your caretaking team can help answer your questions.

For spills and other caretaking requests, place a service request. For more urgent issues, such as water leaks, call 416-978-3000 (otherwise known as “8-3000”).

2. Utilities and building operations: HVAC

Too hot? Too cold? If you find yourself unsure of what to do, our Utilities & Building Operations teams manage the heating, cooling and ventilation (HVAC) on campus and they’re here to help.

The shoulder seasons—spring and fall—present unique challenges. While the leaves change and temperatures fluctuate wildly from morning to evening outside, building operators work to maintain consistent interior temperatures. When not responding to emergencies, the team is busy fine-tuning and monitoring equipment and performing routine maintenance.

Need help? Place a service request or, to discuss more complex questions or issues, reach out to your building operator.

3. Fobs, keys and doors

Is there anything worse than that that sinking “I’ve locked myself out” feeling?

Fortunately, you’re not alone. Access control on campus is organized by talented individuals on both the Campus Safety team and in the Lockshop. The locksmiths can assist if you find yourself in need of a new set of keys for a door or a safe or require maintenance for door hardware. Campus Safety monitors and updates exterior security systems and fob access.

For any of the issues or requests above, place a service request.

The special care and expertise the grounds team bring is on full display in the many flower beds across campus.

4. Grounds

While fall may be on the horizon, our Grounds team is keeping campus in bloom!

They have been hard at work replanting beds in the Landmark gardens around King’s College Circle, tending to perennials at Myhal Centre, and replacing plants along Bancroft Avenue, Sidney Smith Hall, New College and Robarts Commons. In addition to planting, the grounds team removes snow, and maintains the walkways, pathways, sidewalks, and underground utilities on campus, including water mains, sewers, and irrigation systems.

Call 416-978-3000 if you notice a hazardous grounds situation on campus, including slippery surfaces.

5. Lost and found

In all the excitement of a new school year, it’s easy to get a little distracted and misplace an item. And you wouldn’t be the only one! Each week, lost and found receives from 30 to 60 lost items.

If you find an item, drop it off with a member of our caretaking staff in the building in which you found it, or bring it to the caretaking office at 256 McCaul St.

If you lose an item, make an appointment to come and collect it at the caretaking office.

Finally, remember that your property manager is your client representative and primary support for building needs, complex projects and more. Find your property manager here.
