Get to know F&S: Fatima Costa
With a proven track record of client satisfaction and a commitment to excellence spanning over three decades with Caretaking Services, Fatima Costa has been instrumental in maintaining a clean and welcoming campus environment at the University of Toronto.
Fatima Costa, area manager, Caretaking Services, has an impressive 33-year career at U of T.
She began her career as a cleaner, but her dedication quickly led to a supervisory position at Robarts Library. For over 12 years, Costa thrived in this role, overseeing the upkeep of St. George campus’s largest building (75,000 square metres!) and significantly improving its cleanliness.

In 2004, Costa became a caretaking area manager. Since then, her work has included everything from scheduling employee shifts to fostering a healthy and supportive team environment. She ensures that work is divided fairly among staff and that the Caretaking team runs smoothly and efficiently.
“For true teamwork to flourish, communication must be open and inclusive,” Costa emphasizes. “Every voice brings unique value to a collaborative environment.”
Costa points out the need for flexibility in her role to meet client requests, service orders and prepare for the campus’ busy convocation periods. This means prioritizing daily tasks and coordinating resources as new and unexpected situations arise—which they do, almost every day. “I’m always ready to lend a helping hand ” says Costa.
Supporting the coordination of cross-training for front-line staff across campus buildings is another important aspect of Costa’s role. She collaborates with her team to ensure that staff are familiar with each building’s unique layout and systems, enabling them to respond effectively to emergencies.
Costa is also a staunch advocate for sustainability. Over the years, she has spearheaded efforts to transition from harsh cleaning chemicals to eco-friendly alternatives, furthering the University’s commitment to sustainability.
Ron Atkins, manager, Caretaking Services, commends Costa’s valuable contributions and dedication. “She works extremely well with our clients to keep them satisfied and has continuously ensured that our staff stay motivated and inspired to carry out their responsibilities.”
Costa’s dedication to exceeding expectations in support of her team and clients earned her the 2017 University Operations Distinguished Service Award.
Reflecting on her career, Costa offers valuable lessons for others, emphasizing the importance of staying positive, determined, and focused on personal and professional aspirations. “Never give up on your dreams and don’t let obstacles prevent you from achieving your goals.”
Outside of work, Costa enjoys spending time with her grandchildren, gardening, travelling, and reading.
