Get to know F&S: Tracey Fraser
Campus Safety Staff Sergeant Tracey Fraser draws from 34 years of experience to guide her team at F&S.
Tracey Fraser’s career in policing was sparked by a simple desire to help people. This led to an impressive 34 years with the Toronto Police Service, where she worked and led as a detective, strike team leader and road sergeant.
Fraser’s extensive experience and passion for mental health issues brought her to a new community with U of T.
As a staff sergeant with the University’s Campus Safety, she leads a platoon of constables, corporals, communications operators and building patrol who respond to the community’s needs, including emergency first response and crisis management. Tracey is also part of the team that liaises between law enforcement and higher education institutions, and educates students, staff and community members about Campus Safety’s mission of community service.
According to Peter Shipley, assistant director, Campus Safety, “our team investigates crimes against staff, students, faculty and visitors with a trauma-informed approach. Our leaders—like Tracey—understand the law, but more importantly, they care deeply about the experience of those impacted by crime.”

Although Fraser only transitioned to Campus Safety a few months ago, her collaborative and supportive approach has quickly been identified as one of her strengths. “She cares deeply about the experience of those impacted by crime and takes an empathetic approach with both victims and fellow staff,” says Shipley.
For Fraser, the best part of the job is using her experience to guide junior officers in the right direction. “Being professional and treating everyone fairly is the most important thing,” she emphasizes. “We want to ensure the best outcome for all community members.”
“We have a young group of officers,” says Shipley, “so Tracey’s many years of experience in handling complex, challenging situations provides not only her platoon, but the entire Campus Safety team with increased levels of confidence.”
Fraser and her team are always on the go, responding to the community’s needs as they come up, which makes for a hectic workday—but she maintains a positive outlook.
“Tracey’s approach serves to further increase and solidify our strong reputation of service to the University community. We are fortunate to have such outstanding people at all levels serving the University community,” says Shipley.
