Fire drills
Fire drills help ensure that building occupants can exit safely and efficiently in an emergency. All building occupants must participate in drills as required by the Ontario Fire Code and U of T policy.
Why we conduct fire drills
The Fire Prevention team runs fire drills to test building systems and evacuation under real occupancy conditions and to meet the Ontario Fire Code and U of T’s Crisis and Routine Emergency Preparedness and Response Policy.
How often fire drills happen
The Ontario Fire Code sets the minimum fire drill frequency by building type:
- Daycares: Monthly
- Schools: Three times per semester
- Buildings taller than 18 metres: Every three months
- All other buildings: Annually
When fire drills are scheduled
Mandatory evacuation drills are scheduled each August and September for most campus buildings. Notice is posted at building main entrances the day before the drill, and drills may be rescheduled during severe weather.
What to expect on the day of a fire drill
- The building’s fire alarm will sound continuously for up to 15 minutes.
- Everyone inside must evacuate when the alarm sounds. See Fire emergency procedures for full evacuation instructions.
- Buildings are expected to fully evacuate within 3–5 minutes.
Your responsibilities during a fire drill
- All occupants: Evacuate immediately when the alarm sounds and follow the full evacuation instructions on the Fire emergency procedures page.
- Faculty and managers: Help evacuate students and staff via the nearest safe exit and ensure equipment is safely turned off.
