Chief Operating Officer, Property Services & Sustainability

Ron Saporta

Ron Saporta

Ron oversees the strategic and operational functions of Facilities & Services. A professional engineer, he has more than 20 years of experience in senior leadership roles in higher education and health care. He has deep experience in large-scale capital redevelopment, facilities, and support services. 

Ron is passionate about sustainability. He has spearheaded the development of successful sustainability programs, receiving recognition at provincial, national, and international stages. He has received awards from the Recycling Council of Ontario and the Natural Resources of Canada for Energy Efficiency; in 2023, he was a Canada’s Clean16 and Clean50 honouree. 

Since joining the University in 2018, Ron was appointed co-chair of the President’s Advisory Committee on the Environment, Climate Change, and Sustainability, and chair of the Council of Senior Administrative Officers committee on the Facilities Condition Assessment Program. 

He holds a bachelor and master’s of civil engineering from the University of Waterloo. He also holds a master’s of business administration from the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto.

Director, Property Management Group

Mary Byrne

Mary Byrne

Mary oversees property management, fire prevention, elevator services, and environmental hazards and safety. A licensed professional engineer, she has more than 20 years of experience in the energy industry. 

Mary joined the university in 2019 and is a member of the Capital Project and Space Allocation Committee. She is passionate about solving problems, improving outcomes for clients, and ensuring that we’re using our limited resources efficiently. 

She holds a bachelor of civil engineering and management from McMaster University and has a certificate in facilities management from the University of Toronto’s School of Continuing Studies. She is a member of the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering.

Director, Financial Services

Darrel Fernandopulle

Darrel Fernandopulle

Darrel oversees financial services. His portfolio includes finance and IT system operations and development. A certified general accountant, he has more than 30 years of experience in financial services. 

Darrel first joined the university in 1997. He then spent four years managing financial reporting at the City of Toronto before returning to the university as director of financial services in 2005. 

Darrel has won awards from the University of Toronto and the Canadian Association of University Business Officers for designing and implementing an automated invoice workflow processing system. 

After getting his professional accounting designation from the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (UK), Darrel emigrated to Canada from Sri Lanka. He is a member of the Certified General Accountants Association of Canada.

Senior Manager, Business Improvement & Strategic Initiatives

Anna Kulikov

Anna Kulikov

Anna oversees communication, strategic planning, and process and quality improvement. She has experience in management consulting, healthcare, municipal government, and disability services. 

Since joining the university in 2020, Anna has taken on leading a multi-year digital transformation of F&S asset and service management. She has also supported the tri-campus COVID-19 response as a member of the planning and re-entry committee, coordinating critical supply management. 

She holds a bachelor of arts and science and a master of business administration from McMaster University and is a certified Prosci change management practitioner.

Director, Campus Safety

Michael Munroe

Michael Munroe

Michael has spent the last 21 years working with Campus Safety in various capacities such as staff sergeant, associate director and now director. He has distinguished himself as a leader with a focus on a collaborative, respectful, equitable, inclusive and solution-driven approach.

He has established an efficient communication process with senior administration members to ensure that Campus Safety is working to support the university’s mission and mandate.

Michael has achieved numerous certifications in critical incident management, crisis preparedness, assessing and managing violence, risk threat assessment, investigative interviewing, scientific content analysis, post-secondary violence threat risk assessment, trauma counselling for front-line workers, applied suicide intervention and is a certified complaint coordinator through the Ontario Police Services Act.

Michael is a graduate of the police leadership program at the Rotman School of Management and is a member of the Canadian Association of Threat Assessment Professionals, the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators, and the Ontario Association of College and University Administrators where he serves as vice-president, universities.

Director, Utilities & Building Operations

Ray Monteiro

Ray Monteiro

Ray joined U of T in 2023 and oversees utilities and building operations on the St. George campus. He has over 20 years of leadership experience working in utility plants and utility distribution systems and the design and commissioning of mechanical retrofits. Throughout his career, he has led many teams of professional staff and tradespeople. Ray has a bachelor of mechanical engineering from the University of Waterloo and maintains his professional engineering license in Ontario.

Director, Infrastructure Planning & Implementation

Flavio Bertolo

Flavio Bertolo

Flavio joined U of T in 2021 and oversees F&S project planning and implementation on the St. George campus.

He has over 20 years of experience in consulting engineering and leading teams to deliver complex projects in multiple sectors including higher education, healthcare, science, and transit. As a leader, he is passionate about helping others achieve their goals and drive successful outcomes in a relaxed and collaborative team environment.

Flavio holds a bachelor of engineering from Toronto Metropolitan University and a bachelor of education from U of T’s Ontario Institute for Studies in Education.
