Fire safety plans
Fire safety plans are an essential part of the University of Toronto’s fire safety program. Each building on the St. George campus has its own fire safety plan, approved by Toronto Fire Services, in accordance with the Ontario Fire Code.
Annual review
All fire safety plans must be reviewed once a year. After Toronto Fire Services approval or updates, the fire prevention officer prints the updated plan and places it in the building’s fire safety plan box.
When a fire safety plan must be updated
A fire safety plan must be updated or created when:
- Renovations or construction work occur in a building
- A new building is constructed
- A large-scale project affects a building
- Minor renovations require changes to an existing plan
Responsibilities
New buildings or major projects: The consultant or engineer must prepare a new fire safety plan using the university’s template, including required drawings.
Smaller renovation projects: The consultant or engineer must update the existing fire safety plan, including required drawings. To request the current plan, email fireprevention@utoronto.ca.
Approval process
The consultant or engineer drafts or updates the fire safety plan using the U of T template, then emails it to the project manager and fireprevention@utoronto.ca for review.

After revisions, the consultant or engineer sends the fire safety plan to Toronto Fire Services for approval.
Once approved, the Fire Prevention team prints and places it in the building’s fire safety plan box.
