Gas cylinder waste

Gas cylinder waste

Guidance on how to dispose of gas cylinders on the St. George campus, depending on whether your building has a designated chemical waste storage area.

Purchase gas cylinders from companies with a cylinder return policy

Many campus operations produce waste gas cylinders of all types.

The best method of handling gas cylinders involves purchasing them from companies with a return policy.

For gas cylinders that cannot be returned to the manufacturer or supplier, follow the procedures below.

How to dispose of gas cylinders that can't be returned

Buildings with a designated chemical waste storage area

  • Remove the valve from the gas cylinder. A gas cylinder is not considered empty until the valve has been removed.
  • Take the empty cylinder to your building’s chemical waste storage area and label it for waste disposal with the chemical waste labels supplied by the Environmental Protestion Services team. Make sure you don’t cover the original manufacturer/supplier label that identifies the cylinder’s contents.
  • While using a gas cylinder, ensure that the manufacturer/supplier labels are protected so the waste cylinder can easily be identified. Unknown cylinders are much more expensive to dispose of, and it is difficult to find disposal routes for them.
