Fire extinguisher training

Fire extinguisher training on campus

There are 7,400 fire extinguishers on the University of Toronto St. George campus. Understanding how to use them is paramount for personal safety and property protection.

By being properly prepared to use fire extinguishers, U of T students, staff, and faculty may swiftly respond to incipient fires (if it is safe to do so), preventing escalation and potential disasters—containing small fires before they spread, mitigating damage, and reducing the risk of injury or loss of life.

In-person training

U of T Fire Prevention Services offers free hands-on in-person outdoor fire extinguisher training for U of T students, staff, and faculty. Training sessions take place from May through October and run for approximately one hour.

Participants will:

  • Learn fire extinguisher components and basics
  • Discover how to correctly use fire extinguishers
  • Practice using fire extinguishers to combat small, controlled fires
  • Learn the different types of fires (and corresponding extinguisher types)
  • Acquire knowledge of fire preparedness best practices

It is recommended but not required that U of T staff and faculty complete the online fire extinguisher training before doing the in-person training.

Online training

Fire Prevention Services also offers an online fire extinguisher training module, which may be taken at any time through SuccessFactors Learning.

This comprehensive fire extinguisher module equips staff and faculty with the knowledge and skills to handle fire emergencies effectively. The module covers different types of fires, the correct usage of portable fire extinguishers, and other essential fire protection practices. By the end of the module, learners will be better prepared to act safely and confidently in a fire emergency.

To access the module, log into Success Factors with your UTORid. Next, search for course code FPS-1001 or how to use a fire extinguisher.
