The U of T Swap Shop is a service run by Facilities & Services to keep surplus furniture, office equipment, supplies etc. in use. It is regularly replenished by U of T departments removing their old furniture. If you have surplus furniture or equipment that is still useful, we’ll find a new owner.
Whether you’re looking for cheap furnishings for your office, or that occasional gem (tables, chairs, one-of-a-kind equipment), you can find it here.
The Swap Shop is operated by the Office of Waste Management to help reduce campus waste. Access is restricted to members of the University of Toronto community. U of T identification is required.
Once a year the Swap Shop holds a sale to benefit the United Way. Click here for details.

How it works

The Swap Tag

A dated Swap Shop Tag is attached to new items upon arrival. It must be completed and then signed by Swap Shop staff. Any tag not signed by staff will be considered invalid.

Making a claim

For the first two weeks that an item is in the Swap Shop (see date on tags), departments have priority. Once claimed, a department has two weeks to make arrangements for the removal of the item. If the item remains in the shop past the expiry date, it becomes available for a personal claim.

If you wish to claim an item for personal use, and it has been in the Swap Shop unclaimed by a University Department for more than 2 weeks, you may take it immediately (see Rules below) or you may hold it for 1 week by filling in the bottom section of the tag.

If the item has not been in the Swap Shop for more than 2 weeks, you may reserve it for personal use by filling in the bottom section of the Swap Shop Tag. If the item has not been claimed by a University Department by the end of the 2 weeks, you may take it home.

To Pick Up An Item

Items claimed by a department will be held for two weeks. A work order may be completed to have Campus Moving perform the delivery. Contact your property manager or business officer. To make alternate arrangements, contact Reno Strano at 946-5711.

Items reserved for personal use must be picked up no later than one week after they become available (see above). After the one-week period, the personal claim becomes void. The item is then reserved by the next person in line or free to be reserved.

Please note that you are responsible for arranging your own transportation. The Swap Shop has no delivery service for personal claims.

  2. The Swap Shop staff must remove the swap tag and verify claims prior to removal of items.
Items taken from the Swap Shop are NOT FOR RESALE!
  3. A 2-item limit will be imposed on the number of items that any individual may claim for personal use each week. There is no item limit for departmental use.
  4. Items being claimed for departmental use within the first 2 weeks of the item's arrival must be verified by either a letter (on department letterhead) or e-mail from a person with departmental signing authority.
  5. Persons who habitually claim or reserve items and then fail to remove them will lose Swap Shop privileges.
  6. The Swap Shop has no moving service. Campus Moving can perform departmental moves at any time. For personal claims, the claimee is responsible for their own transport. PLEASE USE CAUTION! The Shop is not responsible for any injuries incurred while moving.
