Fire prevention training

Fire safety training equips University of Toronto students, faculty, and staff with essential knowledge, skills, and resources to prevent fires and respond safely and effectively in the event of an emergency.

Our Fire Prevention Services team offers targeted training to ensure compliance with provincial regulations and promote a culture of fire prevention and preparedness on all areas the St. George campus.

Fire safety topics

How to use a fire extinguisher

This training covers the identification and proper use of different types of fire extinguishers, including understanding their parts and components, their locations on campus, and how to use them in the event of a fire.

It is required for all U of T staff, and recommended for students.

It is offered:

Lab fire safety (coming soon)

This training covers important laboratory-specific fire safety topics such as the safe storage of chemicals, the proper use of Bunsen burners, the importance of proper personal protective equipment, and best practices for use and maintenance of fume hoods.


Kitchen fire safety (coming soon)

This training covers general kitchen fire safety practices, proper use of a class K fire extinguisher, details on the kitchen fire suppression system, and what to do in the event of a cooking fire.


Residence fire safety (coming soon)

This training that dons can educate occupants during regular meetings; it ensures awareness of Ontario Fire Code requirements for residence safety, evacuation procedures to assist residents, and general fire safety and housekeeping.


Fire drills & safety in daycares & schools (coming soon)

This training covers general school fire safety practices, including Ministry of Education, quickly exiting buildings, and ensuring student safety in the event of a fire.
