Three ways our residences are promoting sustainability
What is more important than the spaces we inhabit?
In previous articles, we shared ways to make our offices, labs, events, and courses sustainable. Now, it’s time to bring sustainability home to our student residences, where many students live, study, sleep, cook, collaborate, and first experience living on their own.
Here are three ways our residences that certified as sustainable are making living on-campus more sustainable.

The devil is in the details
Small details can go a long way to help students build lifelong habits.
The University College residences have added new waste locations for general and paper waste.
Increasing the number of recycling bins as well as strategically placing them and accompanying posters can make properly sorting waste convenient and easy for students.
Making sustainable living convenient can be applied to all realms of sustainability, such as water and energy conservation, for a holistic approach.

Get students moving
Sustainable living is a healthy lifestyle choice that incorporates nutrition and exercise and can drastically improve students’ quality of life.
Sir Daniel Wilson and Whitney Hall residences have added interior bike storage space to welcome students to campus—with their bikes.
Residences can have a profound role in getting students out of bed and getting active by organizing events, connecting students with resources (such as Bikechain), and promoting an active lifestyle.

Spread sustainability
Sustainability is a way of living, thinking, and interacting with the world that can bring people together.
Look at UC sustainability week as a guide. It is an annual tradition for University College residences to set up events and information booths on the topic of sustainability for awareness, education, and community-building.
Residences are perfect communal spaces to kickstart dialogue about sustainability, share ideas with friends and neighbours, and empower students to make changes in their lives and the lives of others.
