As a business officer with F&S, Guo supervises the Accounts Payable team, oversees suppliers’ invoices and purchase order requests, and processes staff reimbursements. She is enthusiastic about recognizing the support of Usama Makary, finance manager, and Darrel Fernandopulle, director of financial services, and the importance of her team members Moka Ataya, Svetlana Grabare, and Haroon Malik.

“They help me complete my work every day,” said Guo.

Guo’s responsibilities as a business officer are critical for the smooth running of the university. As Canada’s top research institute, the University of Toronto depends on all buildings functioning correctly every day, a feat that requires meticulous support from F&S. Guo’s role is essential for the timely procurement and paying of vendor services and supplies needed to maintain, repair, and upgrade facilities on campus.

Guo uses a goal-oriented approach while applying a personal touch, working hard to understand different departmental needs.

“Understanding their problems is different than just seeing numbers in a system,” said Guo. “The job requires a lot of patience and communication to deliver the best outcome.”

The university faced unprecedented challenges brought on by the pandemic, requiring immense support from staff members like Guo to prepare a safe environment for staff and students.

Guo recalls working after hours to support the tri-campus COVID-19 response planning committee to submit urgent purchase orders for the procurement of hand sanitizer, disinfecting wipes, and other safety supplies.

“I’m grateful that my job supports this learning community,” said Guo. “All I hope is that my efforts help the institution progress as a whole.”
